Steel & Solitude: Zubin Vajifdar’s Life Between the Sea and the Summit

Somewhere between the roar of the engine room and the silence of a Sahyadri sunrise, Zubin found himself.

Fifteen years ago, Zubin Vajifdar set sail on his first cargo vessel, fueled by a childhood dream and a passion for discovering distant horizons. As a dedicated Marine Engineer in the Merchant Navy, his professional life revolves around intricate machinery—boilers, generators, cranes—laboring tirelessly within the steel belly of immense ships. Each voyage calls for constant vigilance: navigating complex systems, overseeing engine maintenance, and ensuring the vessel’s seamless performance while surrounded by endless ocean miles from land.

Yet, Zubin’s life is not defined by industrial routine alone. Whenever he returns to shore, his focus shifts dramatically from the mechanical to the natural. The clangor and momentum of shipboard life recede, replaced by the tranquility and challenge of trekking India’s mountain trails.

His journey as a trekker began in his mid-twenties. “A friend posted about Kalavantin Durg on Facebook, and something in me just clicked” he recalls. That spark was enough to set him on a new path—literally. Kalavantin Durg, a dramatic stone pinnacle in the Sahyadris, became the crucible for his outdoor awakening. “It’s still the trek closest to my heart” he says, remembering the demanding ascent and panoramic vistas.

Unlike thrill-seekers who crave speed, Zubin finds deeper meaning in each step. “Trekking is my solitude” he reflects. “A moment to process, reset, and reconnect with who I am.” Each trail becomes an exercise in mindful movement—embracing physical challenges, unpredictable weather, and the opportunity to explore resilience both on the ground and within himself.

“The sensation of navigating a tough route, discovering new strengths, and persevering when it’s hard… that feeling lingers and transforms you” he observes.

By uniting two seemingly opposite worlds, Zubin embodies a unique harmony. His weekdays are spent surrounded by throbbing engines and rugged metal, while his downtime is devoted to the silent majesty of forests, ridges, and open skies. Both environments, though starkly different, offer him opportunities for introspection, growth, and peace.

“In my work, I am immersed entirely at sea. On land, I give myself fully to nature” he explains. This commitment to living fully in the moment—no matter the setting—defines his rare balance.

In a time when instant gratification and noise dominate, Zubin stands out for his deliberate embrace of places where time seems to slow. Whether deep below deck or standing atop a windy summit, he finds spaces that encourage presence and perspective.
